Bengaluru: On 10 July 2025, in a series of events, shows and talks being organised in honour and celebration of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday – from Ghoton Celebration Committee, Bengaluru, a mesmerising event encapsulated the Students and Faculties of Mount Carmel College, Autonomous, Bengaluru on 8 July 2025. Chief Representative Office, South Zone, being a key member of the Ghoton Celebration Committee in a joint venture with the Department of Political Science and Sociology from Mount Carmel College, designed, discussed, improvised and finalised this event.

The celebration began with College Prayer led by Sonia. It was followed by a welcome address from Prof.Alice Mathew, Head of Department, Political Science. Prof.Alice underlined the words and teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama – the core principles – that have driven the courage, compassion and mindfulness. She reflected upon the legacy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his teaching that parallels the empowerment of youth through value-based education.

Buddhist Monks led by former Chant Master Ven. Geshe Tashi, along with two monks from Drepung Gomang Monastic University, Mundgod, filled the auditorium with the fragrance of spirituality and purity with their distinct Buddhist prayers and their versatility.

Amongst the invited speakers, Sh. Harsh Vardhan Umre (formerly an Indian Revenue Service Official whose last assignment before taking voluntary retirement stands as Additional Director General of the National Academy of Customs, Indirect Taxes and Narcotics), spoke about the achievements of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama from his tender childhood to the present stage. He urged the gathering, particularly the students, to carry out more reading and research about Tibet and the Tibetan way of life – the pursuit of their journey in sustaining their culture, tradition and identity as they remain in exile for more than six decades.

Dr.Tenzin Pasang, Principal, Dalai Lama Institute of Higher Education, shared the memoirs of three people – firstly, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, secondly, his friend and thirdly of his father and himself. Dr.Pasang la stressed upon what Tibet has received from India that was preserved, learnt, practised and now rejuvenated back in India. He underlined the four major commitments of His Holiness the Dalai Lam, promotion of human values, respect amongst the interfaith, preservation of Tibetan Identity and promotion of India’s wisdom of Nalanda’s tradition of learning and education.

Director, Sr.Albina; Principal, Dr.George Lekha; Registrar, Dr.Suma Singh; Deans of Faculties of MBA, Psychology, International Relations, Media & Mass Communication, along with Dr.Priyanka, George, were felicitated by the Ghoton Celebration Committee.

The magnanimity of the event was even more enthralled by beautiful performances from the Tibetan Cultural Troupe nestled in Kalimpong – popularly known as Gangjong Doeghar. Snow Lion Dance and Nangma Toeshey – amongst the other features of Cultural presentation, rekindled the hope of Tibet’s rich cultural and traditional folk arts survival, which deviates from the interpretation of the Chinese version of Tibet, being part of the People’s Republic of China.

More than 1000 students jammed packed the auditorium, raised questions about the anxieties of knowing more about Tibet and selfied along with performers, leaving a footprint of memories of this event in the august campus of Mount Carmel College, Autonomous, Bengaluru. The event started at 11:00 am and ended at 02:00 pm.
