It almost feels preordained that Cece Davis and Talley Wilford—longtime friends with a shared passion for the stage—would eventually join forces. That moment arrived earlier this year with the launch of the merger between the Cambridge-based Groove Theatre and Easton’s The Factory. Now, the new company Groove Factory is stepping into the spotlight with its debut production, 53% Of, directed by Wilford.
Set against the backdrop of an upper-middle-class home during a national election, 53% Of explores the complicated intersections of gender, politics, friendship, and identity. As six women confront one another in moments both mundane and volatile, the play examines how personal relationships are shaped—and strained—by societal expectations and political divides. Sharp, contemporary, and intimate, the piece offers rich emotional terrain for its ensemble.
The Spy asked Cece to stop by the studio for a sneak preview of what it’s all about.
