Odisha Phuntsokling Settlement Celebrating the 90th Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama
Odisha: In a vibrant and joyous atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Tibet Fest, the Phuntsokling Tibetan Settlement celebrated the 90th birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama with a grand four-day event. The entire settlement was adorned with colorful Windhorse flags fluttering in the breeze and maintained with exceptional cleanliness, creating lively and authentic ambiance. This unique celebration honored the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary journey and enduring legacy through cultural, sporting, and community activities.
On the first day, the ceremony was graced by the presence of the District Collector as Chief Guest, Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche as special guest, and the Superintendent of Police as Guest of Honour. The esteemed attendance of the Collector and the Superintendent of Police added a special grace and dignity to the occasion, illuminating the ceremony with their presence. Gyetrul Jigme Rinpoche inaugurated a photo exhibition highlighting the Dalai Lama’s remarkable journey—from a free Tibet to seeking refuge in India, and subsequently establishing the Tibetan government-in-exile. In a symbolic tribute, the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police planted trees in honour of the Dalai Lama’s lifelong dedication to compassion and environmental stewardship. The day was further enlivened with traditional Tibetan dance and cultural songs, celebrating the rich heritage of the Tibetan people.
On the following day, the morning session saw the arrival of Member of Legislative Assembly Shri Dasarati Gomango, who was warmly welcomed with a vibrant display of traditional songs and dances performed by the respective camps, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the Tibetan community. After lunch, the Phuntsokling United Sports Club took charge of organising various sporting events, including volleyball, tug of war, and shot-put competitions between the camps, fostering friendly rivalry and community spirit.
The third day of the celebration was marked by a dynamic blend of sportsmanship and cultural pride. Shri Ashok Ranjeet of the RSS attended as chief guest, further elevating the significance of the event. The morning began with the much-anticipated finals of the boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments, where teams from different camps competed with great enthusiasm and spirit. The matches drew large crowds, with supporters from each camp. Following the basketball finals, the afternoon was dedicated to a vibrant cultural show.
Community members from all age groups took to the stage, presenting a variety of performances that included traditional Tibetan music, and folk dances. The highlight of the evening was the Tibetan circle dance, where participants and spectators joined hands in a symbolic gesture of togetherness and harmony.
The final day was devoted to the preservation and celebration of Tibetan performing arts. The Odisha Lhamo Tsokpa troupe in collaboration with Mainpat Lhamo Tsokpa, presented a full-day performance of the renowned Tibetan opera, “Nangsa Woebum.” This epic opera, based on a beloved Tibetan legend, was performed with elaborate costumes, expressive acting, and live traditional music, captivating the audience from start to finish. The opera not only entertained but also educated younger generations about the rich narrative traditions of Tibet.
Throughout the day, the atmosphere was festive, with food stalls offering Tibetan delicacies and artisans displaying traditional crafts. The opera performance served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and creativity of the Tibetan people in exile, and the importance of preserving their unique cultural identity.
The four-day celebration concluded with heartfelt words of gratitude from the Settlement Officer, who thanked all guests, performers, and community members for their enthusiastic participation. The event left everyone with a renewed sense of pride, unity, and inspiration, truly befitting the 90th birthday celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
